New Homes and Residential

Birdwood Retreat

Blue Mountains, NSW

Robert’s first personal adventure into owner building, a pavilion house that encapsulates some of his early design ideas, style and practical application of sustainability theory.

Situated in the beautiful Blue Mountains, Robert’s most determined client (his wife) wanted to feel a connection to the environment, like living in a tree house, and ensure the sumptuous bush views were captured.

It featured an internal courtyard, allowing light and air to flow through the two spaces, capturing your attention as soon as you enter the front door. With clear vision skylights above the beds to star-gaze at night, bi-folding doors onto a verandah that wrapped the living pavilion, and entire walls that slide open to invite nature into the bedrooms, while sitting in the giant box windows reading a good book. The bathroom featured a 2 person sunken bath, which timber panels disguised it to create a shower platform with a rain showerhead over top.

As with all good architecture, this home’s beauty is in the details and its form. It is the details, composition and character of materials coming together, creating a symphony that resonates throughout every work of Robert Mann Architecture + Design.
